A proposal to decriminalize marijuana got strong support from Dallas voters, but proposals to make changes in the way city government operates —- and significantly increasing the number of police officers — wasn't greeted with the same enthusiasm.

Many Dallas voters have come out in favor of a proposed charter amendment that would decriminalize small amounts of marijuana — but the margins were much narrower on proposals that could significantly change how city government and the police department operates.

District 1 Council Member Chad West said he believes the prohibition on short-term rentals was a bad decision and he wants to look into changing the ordinance. His colleagues on the Government Performance and Financial Management Committee did not agree.

Dallas city officials could be trying to avoid a legal fight after two controversial charter amendments were approved by voters on election day.

Some West Dallas residents have been trying for years to gain City Hall support to close down the GAF shingle plant. Members of the city council were briefed for the first time Tuesday on a process that could limit a resident's right to file for a scheduled closure of the plant.
