Area first responders were dispatched to a reported house fire this (Tuesday) morning northwest of Carroll. Multiple agencies, including the Arcadia and Breda Fire Departments, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Carroll County Emergency Medical Services, and others, responded to the 18000 block of 150 th Street shortly before 8 a.m. on a report of an attached garaged engulfed in flames. A Carroll woman was taken into custody yesterday (Monday) after allegedly assaulting a police officer. According to a Carroll Police Department affidavit, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:49 p.m. to the St. Anthony Regional Hospital campus in the 300 block of S. Clark Street on a disturbance report. Upon arrival, law enforcement made contact with the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Anna Marie Jordan, who became combative with authorities during the exchange. The affidavit alleges Jordan struck the officer in the chest with a closed fist during and proceeded to kick him in the knee, leading to her arrest. She was booked into the Carroll County jail on charges of assault on persons in certain occupations, a serious misdemeanor. As of this (Tuesday) morning, she remained in custody, awaiting an appearance before a magistrate.

A Harlan man faces a felony charge for allegedly forging a Carroll city official’s signature as part of a fraudulent attempt to purchase a home. According to Shelby County District Court records, 41-year-old Patrick James Gaul was arrested by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 14 on one count of forgery, a class D felony. Authorities say Gaul used a document falsely claiming the City of Carroll owed him $430,000 as proof of financing for a real estate transfer between Sept. 1 and Dec. 26, 2024. An investigation found Gaul had forged a city council member’s signature in an attempt to make the document appear legitimate. Gaul’s initial appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Shelby County Courthouse. A class D felony in Iowa carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and $7,500 in fines.

Carroll Fire Chief Dan Hannasch says a Tuesday night house fire serves as a reminder of the importance of smoke detectors. Crews were dispatched at approximately 9:34 p.m. to a reported fire in the 700 block of N. Adams Street. Upon arrival, firefighters located the fire burning in the home’s second story. Fortunately, the occupants were able to exit the structure without injury. Hannasch says, “When we started fighting the fire, the smoke alarms were sounding. Everyone should check their homes to ensure smoke alarms are working because, in this case, they alerted the residents to get out.” Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly two hours and returned to the station at approximately 11:31 p.m. Damage to the structure was limited to smoke and water damage. The Carroll Police Department and Carroll County Emergency Medical Services assisted the Carroll Fire Department at the scene.

Iowa’s 2024 hunting and fishing license sales revealed slight declines in several categories compared to 2023, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Residents purchased 32,021 fishing, hunting, and habitat combination licenses in 2024, down from 36,327 the previous year. Fishing license sales also decreased, with 195,615 annual licenses sold compared to 199,031 in 2023. Lifetime fishing licenses dropped slightly, from 8,773 to 8,741, while three-year licenses fell to 16,110 from 17,428. However, one-day and seven-day fishing license sales rose slightly, and third-line licenses increased to 20,619 from 18,790. Hunting license sales were a mixed bag. Resident annual hunting licenses rose to 40,439 from 39,602 in 2023, while hunting and habitat annual combination licenses dropped to 50,252 from 55,553. Migratory game bird licenses increased slightly, while fur harvester licenses declined. Deer tag trends varied. Youth general deer licenses rose to 13,287 from 12,551, while antlerless for youth increased to 1,309 from 1,050. Archery and shotgun licenses for deer saw slight declines. Combined shotgun season deer tags dropped to 85,874 from 91,912 in 2023. For turkeys, spring gun/bow licenses increased to 18,798 from 16,673, reflecting renewed interest in spring hunting. While most categories trended downward, the 2024 figures show continued steady interest in the outdoors from Iowa’s hunters, anglers, and trappers.
