The world is still not taking climate change seriously enough, even though annual United Nations Conferences of Parties (COPs) try to focus minds on the urgency of the task. Ahead of COP29 in Azerbaijan this November, Bangladesh's Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, has been in Brussels for talks with the EU's Climate Action Commissioner, Wopke Hoekstra, and to participate as a panelist in the opening session of the Second Conference of the Environment and Climate Mobilities Network (ECMN) in the city of Liège.

This year's COP29, the latest annual United Nations Conference of Parties on climate change, is described by the UN as a ‘critical event for global climate action'. Hosted by Azerbaijan, COP29 is especially significant as it will serve as a pivotal platform for evaluating progress on global climate actions and enhancing international climate ambitions, writes Political Editor Nick Powell.

The UK's new Minister for European Union Relations Nick Thomas-Symonds has met Executive Vice President Maroš Šefčovič at the European Commission in Brussels. The meeting was billed by the British government as no more than aiming “to set the ground for further discussions between the UK and EU as the UK seeks to reset its relationship with the bloc and build closer cooperation on shared issues”.

The new UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has taken full advantage of the opportunity presented to him by hosting a meeting of the European Political Community, which brings together nearly all the countries of Europe, both members and non-members of the European Union. Sir Keir pressed his agenda of increasing EU-UK cooperation on illegal migration and national security. He pledged greater British involvement in Europol and increased cooperation with the EU border agency, Frontex.
