With time running out for school districts to use federal COVID-19 funds, financially strapped schools are mulling whether to use the funds for pandemic relief or just to pay bills.

Kvistad retired from the district in 2020 after 19 years, during which she served as an elementary principal and associate superintendent.

The preliminary budget calls for eliminating about 155 positions, a majority of which would be teachers and educational assistants.

District officials and medical professionals said the mandate is "out of date" as the pandemic moves into a new stage.

School staff were able to quickly identify the student and isolate them in a secure part of the building until police arrived.

“That's why people are so generous. Because it's your neighbor. We're not shipping toys across the country or anything. We're giving them to people who live down the street from you or in your community,” she said.

For more than 100 years, the Empty Stocking Club, a charitable arm of the Wisconsin State Journal, has provided new toys for needy families in Dane County at Christmas.

“Christmas is a time to honor childhood. It’s an opportunity to make children feel happy and loved. And that’s kind of what it’s all about.”
