The historical relationship between the village of Moose Lake and the railroad began on June 30, 1870 when the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad reached Moose Lake from St. Paul. By August 1870, the railroad reached Duluth and the shores of Lake Superior after commencing construction of the line in August 1867. The railroad was built in three stages: St. Paul to Wyoming (August 1867-December 1868); Wyoming to Hinckley (December 1868-January 1870); and Hinckley to Duluth (January-August 1870). The last spike on the line was driven in Thompson in August and the first passenger train to Duluth ran on September 1, 1870, leaving St. Paul around 8 a.m. and arriving in Duluth at 11:35 p.m. It stopped in Moose Lake sometime that afternoon. Although that seems incredibly slow, the steam engine pulling the train was fueled by cordwood and water which had to be replenished every few miles or so which greatly added to travel time. Later on, coal fired steam engines would reduce travel time dramatically.
