I love it when filmmakers can surprise me. "Heretic," written and directed by the duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, surprises on multiple levels. I knew Beck and Woods could write a good horror movie due to their script for "A Quiet Place," but that was a specific type of horror: a high concept mainstream crowdpleaser focused on funhouse frights over big ideas.

Winning the Academy Award for Best Picture guarantees a movie its place in the history books. But does anyone watch every movie listed in the history books?

"The Wild Robot," based on the popular children's book by Peter Brown and adapted for the screen by animation legend Chris Sanders, arrives just in time for the 30th anniversary of the founding of DreamWorks Animation. On a sadder note, it's also the last film the studio made completely in-house before severe downsizing, but the artists who worked on it should take pride in crafting one of the most beautiful works of computer animation ever produced — and one that will certainly land on the list of best animated movies of 2024.

When no studio wanted to make the retrofuturist architectural drama/Roman history fable "Megalopolis," Francis Ford Coppola sold off part of his wine business to help fund the passion project, which cost between $120 and $136 million, according to reports. Now that the long-in-the-works epic is finally in theaters nationwide, it's easy to see why studios didn't want to make it: "Megalopolis" has failed to capture the imagination of movie-goers, and those who have seen it mostly don't care for it. The opening weekend gross came out to an estimated $4 million, even lower than initial projections of a $5-7 million weekend.

Is it ironic or just coincidental that "The Franchise," an HBO sitcom about how comic book movie franchises are killing cinema, is airing right after "The Penguin," a spin-off of a comic book movie franchise? And, acknowledging this is absolutely comparing apples to oranges, what does it mean when "The Penguin" is somehow the better show in almost every way?
