I'm in my mid-60s and in the spring I split from my girlfriend of six years; we'd lived together in what had previously been my house for three. Her teenage daughter lived with us half the time; I tried hard to get along with her, but found her sullen and moody and resentful, and it was constantly difficult. Eventually things came to a head and we broke up – pretty much by mutual agreement – sold the house and went our separate ways.
