Detroit's skyline will look different in the coming years, but not as different as we thought it could. Bedrock and GM announced their intentions for the RenCen today, which includes a large public and entertainment spaces, high-end residential, and the demolition of two of its main towers.
It's currently running a continuous 36-hour service through 7 p.m. on Thanksgiving, with special events for riders. From 6-10 p.m. Wednesday (tonight), join the Raid Train with a DJ at the Broadway Station. Two weeks ago, Bedrock and GM announced plans for the future of the Ren Cen, which included the demolition of two of the towers and seeking public funding for the plan. Reactions came in quickly from around the region. Here are a few of the news stories that came after the announcement.
The University of Michigan has closed on a plot of land close to where the UM Center for Innovation is under construction. The university purchased the 2.3 acres at 2201 Grand River for $9.5 million, it announced this week.
161 new apartments are now complete in Milwaukee Junction. Piquette Flats, an adaptive reuse of a former Albert Kahn industrial building, is now open.
The hotel includes a new 10-story building with 154 guest rooms, a fitness room, meeting rooms, and a cozy lounge on the first floor. A conservatory with a bar connects to the Bonstelle Theatre, which is currently being restored (and not open for photos) will open as an event space this spring.
