West Virginians would no longer be guaranteed the right to public hearings on legislation under new rules proposed by the House of Delegates leader in January 2025. After House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay, announced the proposed rules, citizens and advocates raised concerns about how the new process would limit public participation. “It’s essentially doing away with public hearings,” said Del. Evan Hansen, D-Monogalia, adding that if House Republicans want the new process to "preserve public hearings” then more information needs to be provided.

The City of Dunbar, West Virginia approved a $100k settlement at their meeting on January 21, 2025, in the federal police brutality case filed against the city and two Dunbar police officers in May 2024. The lawsuit stems from a June 2022 incident involving a man named Rickey Baire, 38, of Dunbar, who alleged in the May 2024 the lawsuit that Dunbar Police officers Zachary Winters and Adam Mason used excessive force during an arrest. City attorney Steve Swisher acknowledged that the settlement is "a bitter pill to swallow,” but said it was better to settle for $100,000 than to potentially lose in court and have to pay even more.

Brian Cunningham, who led the West Virginia Public Employees Insurance Agency for about a year and a half, has left the position, a spokesperson for PEIA confirmed on Jan. 22, 2025. Cunningham resigned effective the end of day on Jan. 10, 2025, according to his letter — dated Dec. 23, 2024 — to the state Department of Administration Cabinet Secretary John McHugh.
