I will begin a new book discussion here in two weeks (June 17). The book is How To Think About God by Mortimer Adler. Adler is a well-known American philosopher who also edited the Encyclopedia Britannica. He is the author of many books. He was not a Christian when he wrote this book. He writes about the subject solely as a philosopher.

I began this series in the immediately preceding essay. You should read that before reading this one. There I suggested two habits that enhance critical thinking: reading and suspicion. Read widely and deeply. Fiction and nonfiction. Simply reading rewires the brain to think critically. Scientific studies have shown it. Receive messages that contain truth claims made authoritatively with suspicion. Especially when you are expected to believe them and when they are controlling. Whether it be a sermon or a lecture or a proposed law or political platform or whatever.

The book is How to Think about God: A Guide for the 20th-century Pagan by philosopher Mortimer Adler. Today's section is Part One—Prologue, especially Chapters 1 and 2.

This is part 3 of a series of essays about how to be a critical thinker. We need more people to be that. I have always been one and have suffered for it.
