I was at a party last weekend and had a couple of conversations with college professors about their use of AI. I was curious how they were dealing with the tools, whether they were embracing them or blocking them. These two were at opposite ends of the spectrum, though interestingly for the same reason. They wanted to encourage their students' critical-thinking skills, either with the help of the models or without them.

Think back, if you will, to three years ago. Yes, ChatGPT had been released the prior year, but cloud companies weren't seeing much benefit yet. In fact, the market was in a lull. AWS growth plunged to 12% for Q2 and Q3 that year, growth numbers so abysmal it's hard to imagine now. You may recall companies were cutting back on cloud spending, and pundits (like me) were suggesting that AWS's glory days might be behind them.

It's been a wacky summer. We've seen the big AI labs watch their models run amok and go off hacking. We've seen Mark Zuckerberg make a lame attempt to write a happy manifesto (clearly with the help of AI) about his vision of our AI future (didn't see that coming). We've seen a battle over open-weight models. We've seen fire and we've seen rain.

You don't get much more enterprise old school than IBM's consulting division working with companies to roll out complex software (while jacking up the price of a process that's already expensive).
