Norman “Wormy” Simerly's greatest legacy was his kindness and friendship. As his obituary stated, “he was rich in family, friends, adventures, experiences, and memories.”

Roger L. Bowers has a vast knowledge of his family's history, especially that of Leonard Bowers, his third great-grandfather. Bowers and his late wife, Marie Claire (Boucher) Bowers, began researching the family roots of Leonard Bowers in the 1970s. Since Claire's death in 2016, Roger said he had a renewed drive and energy to finish the research, which he has published in a 500-plus page book. The book can be purchased at the Gift Shop at Sycamore Shoals State Park as well as online at Amazon.com and Kindle Books.

Linda Sue Jones was a gospel singer, who sang with the Melody Trio for 12 years plus. She along with her husband, Raymond, and family friend Tim Hughes made up the group, which traveled near and far to sing and witness for the Lord. They not only sang in churches, but on stage at the Grand Ole Opry twice, at gospel singing conventions, and did a missionary trip to Jamaica.

First Christian Church, Elizabethton, last Sunday recognized its organist, Gene Estep, for his 50 years of service to the church. For Estep, it was a surprise as some friends from Knoxville came for the service as well as some friends from his high school days. Also, some wrote letters and notes of congratulations.

It will soon be a year since Rex Allen Whitehead died. Whitehead of Roan Mountain died August 31, 2023, at the age of 58. His legacy of kindness and love still lives on with family and friends.
