Mr. James Weiner was known by many names — husband, father, son, grandpa, brother, uncle, Magoo, Jimmy, and friend. He excelled in all these roles, as anyone who knew him would agree.

Mr. Kenneth T. Mears passed away on Aug. 12, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the age of 51. Born Aug. 3, 1973, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Ken led a life marked by kindness, a deep love for his family, and a courageous battle against cancer for 12 years.

Mr. Scott Dalton “Scotty” Hanback, 72, passed away at his home in Crisfield, Md., on Aug. 7, 2024. Born on June 20, 1952, in Washington, D.C., Scott grew up on the Chesapeake Bay, where he developed a lifelong passion for the outdoors.

Mr. Edgar Arrowsmith Roberts, 85, of New Church, passed away peacefully on Aug. 10, 2024. He was surrounded by his family on his little slice of country paradise that he called home.

Mrs. Jean Elizabeth Leggett Wallace, 75, of Jamesville, formerly of Chic’s Beach, passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024. She was born on Jan. 10, 1949, in Martin County, N.C., to the late John William Leggett Sr. and the late Mattie Virginia Leggett.

In sure and certain hope of the resurrection, Mrs. Karla Churn Lewis, 78, of Bowling Green, died on Aug. 21, 2024, at VCU Medical Center, a place she always called MCV because she was not fond of the name change.

Recent autumn-like temperatures have teased us with the prospect of an early fall, only to be brought back to reality this week with air temperatures in the 80s. Still, the change in temperatures has spurred a portion of the cobia and red drum population to begin schooling up in preparation for their annual southern migration. Not to worry though; we should see these species remain available to local anglers through the majority of September and possibly beyond. Look for lower bayside speckled trout numbers to increase as the air and water temperatures start to fall.
