Wall Street traders are staying one step ahead of the Federal Reserve. Heading into Wednesday, traders had expected that the Federal Reserve would cut interest rates only twice next year—fewer than most Fed officials had indicated in their own September forecasts.
Wall Street investors entered each of the past two years brimming with optimism about U.S. Treasurys and other types of high-quality debt. In recent weeks, money managers have been dumping Treasurys, while savers have been rushing out of longer-term bond funds. All that selling has pushed Treasury yields to the upper end of their two-year range.
The selloff in government debt is making it costlier to borrow, jarring stocks and pressuring indebted countries.
