Iowa Lieutenant Gov. Adam Gregg resigned his position effective immediately Tuesday to take a job leading the Iowa Bankers Association, he said in a surprise announcement.

Ashley Hunt, a spokesperson for Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, said the secretary of state's office will hold off on certifying the ballots until it receives clarity from the courts.

Des Moines Register Gov. Kim Reynolds said Wednesday she will take her time replacing former Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg after he resigned one day earlier to take a job leading a banking group.

Gregg, a Republican, left office this week to take a job leading the Iowa Bankers Association.

Any decision in the case is expected to be appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court. Iowa ballots must be ready to be mailed by Sept. 21.
