Xuehua Zhong in Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis has won a $1.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation for research aimed at developing more resilient crops that can adapt to changing environmental conditions and support sustainable agriculture.

Humans and most other organisms have internal biological clocks that track the daily cycle of sunrise and sunset. These clocks help time our sleep, metabolism and other essential body functions over the course of a day, creating daily patterns called circadian rhythms. Research shows that when these rhythms are disrupted—by jet lag, lack of sleep or irregular work schedules—people can suffer long-term negative health effects.

Noah Kabbaj was an avid reader in middle school. The literary world was a space where he could experiment with ideas and get exposed to new environments. Reading ahead of many of his classmates, Kabbaj got caught up in the story of Esther Greenwood, the talented college student in Sylvia Plath’s classic novel, “The Bell Jar.” In the book, Esther spirals into severe depression in 1950s New York City and is admitted to a hospital for treatment.

Graduate student speaker Sejal Popat, who earned a master’s in fine arts in illustration and visual culture from the WashU Sam Fox School, delivered a message to the Class of 2026 at Washington University in St. Louis during the May 15 Commencement ceremony on Francis Olympic Field.

Researchers at WashU Medicine found that adults who regularly experience short or poor-quality sleep, as well as those who work night shifts, face a significantly higher risk of developing osteoarthritis and requiring hip or knee replacement surgery.

Ravi Vij, MD, a national leader in the research and treatment of blood cancers, has been installed as the inaugural Jeffrey S. and Prue H. Gershman Distinguished Professor in the John T. Milliken Department of Medicine at WashU Medicine.
