Also let go were American defensive end Ali Fayad, who was expected to contend for a starting job but got injured on Day 1 of rookie camp, along with defensive linemen Jordan Lewis and David Green, offensive lineman Kendall Randolph, American receivers Bryce Mitchell and Keytaon Thompson, and American kicker Jose Borregales. Transferred to the suspended list for unspecified reasons were American defensive backs James Campbell and Montae Braswell, American receiver Braxton Burmeister and American defensive lineman Kenny Randall. A starting offensive line for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers that has looked largely the same over the last few years will have a decidedly different make-up in 2024.

It was only the first day of main training camp and already the Winnipeg Blue Bombers had to deal with a lengthy delay due to poor air quality.

Advertisement 2 Article content BOMBSHELLS: Bombers realize they're going to have to get used to air quality delays, make necessary adjustments Back to video Smoke from northern fires hung over the city of Winnipeg Sunday morning and forced the team to move the start of its practice session from 9 a.m, to 2:30 p.m. Article content It seems the Bombers better get used to it because another dry summer is projected and if wildfires are wreaking that kind of havoc already on May 12, imagine what it's going to be like when the temperatures rise in June and July. “I'm certainly not a meteorologist, but from what you hear, this could be a dry summer and we'll be dealing with this,” Bombers head coach Mike O'Shea said. “If this is all we have to deal with, that's great because a lot of people have forest fires raging by their towns and there's a lot more they're worried about. “Switching practice around is really nothing.” Advertisement 3 Article content O'Shea said he was glad the team got the players on the field at all. At one point the Bombers said the practice would be held indoors Sunday afternoon, but changed it back to Princess Auto Stadium when there was a change in the air quality index. “It's Day 1 and everyone's fired up,” O'Shea said. “To a man I think they would have been disappointed if we held back and they didn't get a chance to get out here. But Mother Nature co-operated.” Veteran linebacker Adam Bighill, who is on the CFL Players Association executive, said it wasn't a bad thing for the Bombers players to get accustomed to this kind of disruption. “Everybody has to go with the flow,” Bighill said. “We were able to do that, adjust, get our walkthrough done inside early and then things were better this afternoon. Advertisement 4 Article content “It's a good thing to have happen early on and It's a lesson in being fluid and coming out here and having a great practice. We hope it's not going to be that bad of a summer but by all reports it could be a bad one, so we'll see.” Bighill said the players have to appreciate that the Bombers and the league are looking out for the players' welfare. Until a few years ago, something like this never would have happened. “There's a reason why Health Canada has put out publications and recommendations on safety,” Bighill said. “It's because it's been deemed unsafe and if that's the case then we should all take it seriously. It's good that the CFL is taking that seriously as well because you may not have a problem today, but maybe 10 years from now you have real lung issues.” Advertisement 5 Article content INJURED BENNETT RELEASED Anthony Bennett, the Bombers first-round draft pick (eighth overall) in 2023, was surprisingly released on Sunday, but it doesn't sound like this is the end of his time in Winnipeg. Bennett, who appeared in every game for the Bombers last year, is hurt and the team simply couldn't afford to hold a roster spot for him during training camp. Should the Canadian defensive end choose to stick around, the Bombers intend to help him rehab his injury so he can eventually get back on the roster. “We're certainly not writing him off,” O'Shea said. “We picked him for a reason and we like him. He's just not healthy right now.” The Bombers also released American defensive end Ali Fayad, who got injured on the first day of rookie camp. He's also expected to stick around and go through the rehab process. Advertisement 6 Article content “There's a few guys that we're going to have work with (head athletic therapist) Al (Couture) and his staff to see where we can get them.” In total, the Bombers released eight players on Sunday and transferred four more to the suspended list. ‘IT'S LIKE I NEVER LEFT' Canadian defensive back Tyrell Ford is back after a year of trying to land work the NFL and he has his sights set on a starting gig with the Bombers. The 26-year-old could contend for a spot at cornerback as he has the kind of speed and footwork that made him attractive to the NFL's Green Bay Packers. Ford, whose twin brother Tre started games at quarterback for the Edmonton Elks last season, was drafted in 2022 and was on the Bombers roster for much of that season. We've still got a lot of guys here, who were here when I was here.” After he was released by Green Bay in the summer, Ford spent the rest of the NFL season trying to find work but wasn't able to sign a contract. “My agent was pretty confident that we were going to get something somewhere else, but it didn't happen,” Ford said. Ford, who is from Niagara Falls, Ont., and went to school at the University of Waterloo, is convinced he has what it takes to start at cornerback in the CFL. “American, Canadian, it doesn't really matter,” he said. “I just have to go out there and compete and do the best I can do and see where it takes me. “I think I've got a good shot everywhere I go. I'm pretty confident in myself. I've just got to be myself, play confident. Like so many, Ted started his musical journey after seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show, and was urged to play bass early on. He’s played with a number of bands for many years, including one that opened for Vanilla Fudge. Recently, he's shared large outdoor events with headliners including The Allman Brothers, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy. His current power trio, Cold Sweat, often plays in the area, including an upcoming date in Wayne at the Greenhouse Bar & Grill on April 22nd.

Advertisement 2 Article content O'Shea looking forward to Bombers learning from pre-season loss to Riders Back to video That's are just a few of many observations from Monday's 25-12 loss the Saskatchewan Roughriders in an early CFL pre-season game at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on Victoria Day. Article content There were many noticeable players, whether it be for strong or poor play and the Bombers looked undisciplined and innafective with rookies throughout the lineup. The results of pre-season games don't mean much but the opportunities for player evaluation are plentiful and the Bombers coaching staff certainly got to see a lot of raw players in action. “I like the fact that we've got a lot of guys that we like,” Bombers coach Mike O'Shea told CJOB radio after the game. “This going to be exciting. I'm looking forward to them learning. We can put this tape on tomorrow and they are going to be better in a day or two and it's just going to be fantastic.” Advertisement 3 Article content Here's a look at some notable observations from Monday's game. — Streveler looked pretty good while playing most of the first quarter. He was 7-for-8 passing, for 65 yards and ran three times for 25. Pretty typical numbers from when he was last here in 2019. — Said O'Shea: “I think he did what we needed him to do. I like the fact that it's Chris Streveler, the guy that left here, the positives attributes are in the guy we're getting back. All the experiences that he had down in that other league have served him well. That bodes well for Chris and our team.” — Wilson didn't get off to terrific start but came back strong to throw for 11 completions on 16 attempts, 123 yards and a touchdown pass to Canadian rookie Kevens Clercius. Something major would have to happen between now and June 6 for him to not be the Bombers third-string QB this season. Advertisement 4 Article content — Barriere had a horrible game, going 3-for-6 and throwing for 23 yards along with two ghastly interceptions in just over a full quarter of playing time. O'Shea sugar-coated it a bit, but it seems unlikely Barriere will outlast Wilson for the third-string spot. — Said O'Shea: “Not bad. He'd like to have a couple throws back where he just lost sight of the underneath coverage. He's out there working. What I like is it didn't deter him, he's out there slinging, trying to make plays.” — A few players stood out on defence, including linebacker Tre Thomas and defensive ends Tyjuan Garbutt and Chauncy Rivers. Thomas had four tackles and was seemingly all around the ball, while Rivers and Garbutt both produce quarterback sacks. The latter two are part of an intense battle for a starting defensive end role. Advertisement 5 Article content — The kick return and coverage teams did not have a good day as the Riders had several great returns and couple more that were taken off the board due to penalties. Several players got opportunities on returns, with three or four of them vying to fill the role held by Janarion Grant, but O'Shea didn't really like what he saw. — Said O'Shea: “I think we would have liked them to attack the ball more. We need to have a little remedial session.” — Clercius had a nice game, nabbing all three balls thrown his was for 24 yards and a touchdown. American Tyler Adams, who wasn't originally listed on the roster, led the team with four catches for 61 yards. There should be a strong competion over the next two weeks before a fifth starting receiver is chosen. Advertisement 6 Article content — Sergio Castillo kicked a 53-yard field goal in the first quarter, suggesting the veteran has his game ready. — Said O'Shea: “It's funny because I asked him at the beginning of the game, what he was good from and he pointed to the one direction and into the wind a bit and he says ‘Ball on the 47 and in the other direction ball on the 55. So I wrote down 50 to make it a 57-yarder, instead of 52 and he looked at me and I said “I said 55, donkey, don't give me this look.' We laughed but he would have been good from further out for sure. I liked that his competitive juices were flowing but he was disappointed that I wrote down 50 instead of 55.” — The Bombers don't play again until May 31 at home in Calgary, their final pre-season game, and will open the regular season at home against Grey Cup champion Montreal on June 6. QB Chris Streveler showed he’s ready to pick up right where he left things when he was last with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers five years ago.

It was an all-Manitoba match-up, featuring two all-time great skips chasing their own pieces of history, and it made for a tantalizing finale to a memorable Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Sunday evening.
