The annual Basketball camp at the Altavista YMCA was a huge success, drawing its largest turnout in years with more than 70 participants in the morning session for kindergarten through 5th grade students. Special guests included Hilliary Scott who is the men's basketball coach for University of Lynchburg and Mike Cartolaro. Campers had fun, improved their basketball skills, learned valuable lessons about teamwork and sportsmanship, and created lasting memories.

Woodruff Motor Sport Kids Racing went racing on Sunday, June 28, at the Booker Building in Altavista after moving the race to Sunday due to the weather on Saturday. The weather was still unsure for Sunday so they raced inside.

Concord Volunteer Fire Department celebrated the 4th of July with its 64th annual 4th of July parade. The parade started at 10 a.m. at the Concord Elementary School and went down Village Highway to the Concord Volunteer Fire Station. On Saturday morning of July 4th the temperatures were heating up for a hot day with expected temperatures reaching 100 degrees.

On Sunday, August 9 at 9:30 a.m., Lambs Community Church located at 2591 Lambs Church Road, Altavista, will celebrate its 100th Anniversary of Rededication. The church is excited to have recently welcomed Rev. Andy Benton as pastor. The public is invited to attend as they rededicate their church. A potluck lunch will be held immediately following the service.

Altavista was the place to be July 9-12 when Avoca Museums and Historical Society celebrated its Avoca Lights, Liberty and Legends. This was a special celebration at Avoca and the weather was perfect with only a few afternoon rain showers.

The current state of the Vista Theatre is coming along, but still has a ways to go.

Brookville Middle School welcomes Ethan Velivlis as the new band teacher. Velivlis comes to BMS from his hometown of Virginia Beach and is a recent graduate of Virginia Tech with a B.A. degree in Music Education and a M.A. degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

Former Brookville-Timberlake Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Jerry Womack passed away Saturday, July 25, at his home in Lynchburg. On Saturday, August 1, family, friends, fellow firefighters, and fire responders from across Central Virginia gathered to honor his life and legacy.

On Tuesday, August 4 from 5 to 9 p.m., English Park was the place to be when Altavista Police Department hosted the 2026 National Night Out. This event offered free food, free music, fireworks, and a great time for the community to come together. Even with rain in the forecast the crowd was great. It was a wonderful evening to spend time with family, friends, and neighbors. Thanks to all the businesses, groups, and organizations that took part in this special night. This was a fantastic family event with something for everyone. The kids had inflatables, face painting, games, and so much more.
