Lewis threw six touchdown passes and ran in another major, as the Panthers won the under-the-lights clash 49-20 over the Holy Trinity Falcons on Wednesday at Joe St. Denis Field. “Yeah, I probably won't sleep much tonight,” Lewis said in the middle of the hoopla as players, students and family members celebrated and took photos in the end zone near the giant scoreboard just after the conclusion of the annual football clash between Catholic high schools in Cornwall, funds raised this year in support of the Children's Treatment Centre. Lewis, economical with words after the game, sure had his play speaking volumes during it as the Panthers' passing yardage piled up. He had pinpoint accuracy, doing the little things well – and the big things spectacularly. An exclamation mark came with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter when Lewis somehow avoided being sacked near midfield, then launched a 45-yard touchdown pass to Kade VanBeilen to put the game far out of reach, 35-6. Advertisement 3 Article content The Panthers struck for two more majors less than a minute apart midway in the fourth quarter, with Lewis first hitting a streaking receiver in stride up the middle for a long score. Lewis, also on the field as a defensive back, recorded one of four Panthers interceptions for the night, before going back on offence and playing pitch-and-catch with receiver Lukas Gault on a 20-yarder to close out the scoring, a seventh extra point added by kicker Aidan Mayer. When it was all over, long-time Panthers assistant coach Pat Shane spoke about Lewis' progression as a quarterback from last season to the current one, his composed play and rapidly improving ability to survey the field before throws. “When (Lewis) was scrambling tonight he was always looking down the field – he was really poised,” Shane said. “That just comes with getting more experience.” Advertisement 4 Article content Shane had kudos for the whole St. Joseph's coaching staff – including defensive co-ordinator Dan Lapierre – and head coach Mitch Zappitelli. “Mitch is our foundation, he's a very hard-working coach,” Shane said, adding both teams on the field had their moments to shine. “I thought it was a really good effort by both teams.” Give the Falcons – and their very enthusiastic fans – credit for not giving up, even when the outcome was decided. It was Holy Trinity which connected for the last score of the night, its own talented quarterback, Kaleb Martin on the last play from scrimmage running five yards for the score, after big chunks of running yards had been gained by ball-carrier Daine McMillan. Advertisement 5 Article content Martin tossed a two-point conversion to Dante Lemoyre to end the game, clearing the way for the Panthers' celebration. The Falcons biggest celebration of the night? It came on a thrilling final play of the first half. They were in desperation mode trailing 20-0, and after a short toss by Martin to Shalom Kofoworade got the Falcons to the St. Joseph's 35-yard-line, the quarterback threw a hail-Mary pass deep into the end zone – and it was caught for the score by Stanton Antoine. That drew a huge roar from the Falcons' section of supporters, and Holy Trinity had momentum going into the third quarter, with the deficit trimmed to a manageable 21-6. Lewis tipped his cap to the Falcons after the game, calling them a good squad and admitting he didn't think the Panthers would enjoy the margin of victory they ultimately did. The Panthers' offence was the biggest reason why St. Joseph's regained full control of the game in the second half, Lewis throwing 20-yard TD pass to Kolton Belmonte with five minutes left in third quarter, pushing the lead to 28-6. The Falcons' first of two majors in the fourth period had Martin tossing five yards to Lemoyre. The scoring ice on a very cool night – it dropped to 5 C – was broken when Lewis scampered in from 10 yards. Lewis tossed two TD passes in the final three minutes of the half, to Abdussalam Elkurbo (25 yards) and Belmonte (five yards), and a close game was suddenly a 21-0 Panthers' lead. Even better for head coach Alan Wheeler's team, the Patriotes recorded a shutout in a game that allowed them to get a lot of players on the field. “We played a lot of non-starters today,” Wheeler said of the opportunity for the Patriotes to work on depth against a Kodiaks team that's in its first year back in the league. “(The Kodiaks) played well. And our defence played well – we created (several) turnovers on defence.” One of the turnovers, an interception by Jakob Lapointe late in the game when the Kodiaks were having their best drive of the day, preserved the shutout. Advertisement 3 Article content It turned out all the offence the Patriotes needed came in the first half, the home side jumping out to a 10-0 lead. That came courtesy of a Jaziah Meade major on a jet sweep, and a Zachary Aubin field goal. The Patriotes were resting quarterback Jonah Gratton, so it was pivot Caleb Cardinal – he's also a receiver and safety – who got the start. Then in the second half, it was junior-age quarterback Zachary Gallagher – he doubles as a receiver – who guided the offence and also did a solid job, as the home side extended its lead to 13-0 on an Aubin 35-yard field goal late in the third quarter. Midway in the fourth period, a safety on a mishandled Hawkesbury punt deep in the Kodiaks' zone made it 15-0 – still a two-score game – but the result of the play also meant the Patriotes regained ball possession, and it didn't take them long to capitalize. Advertisement 4 Article content First, Gallagher at midfield launched a 40-yard pass down the sideline to Cardinal that put the ball at the Hawkesbury eight-yard line. On the next play, Landon Prieur got the carry and the major score to put the home side up by three TDs. About that game on the horizon, next Thursday at St. Joseph's, a 12:30 p.m. start and two undefeated squads going at it. It's a rematch between the teams that played in the playoff final last mid-November, when the Panthers posted a 28-7 win. It also could be a very interesting clash of styles. La Citadelle featured a spread offence and then a wing offence Friday, and there's a lot of deception and different options as to who will carry the ball – or if the quarterback will throw it. The Panthers in their Charity Bowl win Wednesday night were pretty straightforward about what they were doing – QB Matt Lewis dropped into the pocket often, and chucked the ball around the yard to the tune of six TD passes.
