Way, way ahead of its time.

The opening level of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a divisive one for new players. For Indy nerds obsessed with the films, it’s pretty neat to slowly realize you’re smack dab in the middle of the series' most venerated scenes. On the other hand, though, opening the best Indiana Jones adventure in more than three decades with a set piece lifted from his past exploits creates early concern that the rest of the game might be fixated on reiterating the classics.

This year’s Game Awards was a pretty big improvement over last year’s event. It finally some acknowledged the layoffs that have torn the industry apart over the last two years. Award winners were given ample time to thank their loved ones and colleagues without being rushed off stage. And perhaps most important to the more than 100 million viewers who tuned in, there were some genuine earth-shattering reveals, including Naughty Dog’s next project, The Witcher 4, and an Okami sequel (with Hideki Kamiya at the helm no less) that no one saw coming.

The open-world genre dominates the current gaming landscape like few others. Every other game of note in the last decade has given players the ultimate freedom of exploring massive environments at their own pace. Even non-traditional open-world games, like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, incorporate design elements of the popular genre to help create a sense of scale and adventure. While many of these games are worth players’ time, there’s no denying the oversaturation of adventures that take dozens of hours to complete.

As we near the end of 2024, leaks regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 continue to ramp up. And at this point, those with close knowledge of the new console seem less and less concerned with ruining the surprise before Nintendo can reveal it on its own terms.
