The anxiously awaited election for president of the United States has come and gone, and Donald J. Trump has emerged victorious. This was a very hard-fought contest, but as things currently stand, there should be an uneventful transition of power in January, 2025.

One of the most important elements in modern society is the dissemination of accurate information. It is what drives the engine of commerce and daily life. Human beings have a strong need to be connected and informed, and that has partially been the function of journalistic instruments. Without such tools, communication is muted and people are prone to the illusions that result from disinformation promulgated by those who do not have the communities’ best interests at heart. Black newspapers are the heralds in the Black community that keep us informed about ideas and issues that are important to the community.

For over 84 years, the Chicago Crusader has been a steadfast advocate, voice, and chronicler of the Black experience. Our commitment to our readers goes beyond mere reporting—it is a crusade for truth, justice, and equality. As a member of the Black Press, the Crusader shoulders the responsibility of not only documenting our community’s struggles but also celebrating its triumphs. This second editorial continues our call to action: the Black community must control its narrative and amplify its voice.

These are changing times, and where we end up will depend upon how we respond to changes. America is on the verge of embarking in new territory that promises to challenge most Americans, and Black Americans fit in this scenario.

There are a lot of people, particularly Black people, who accuse others of “bleaching their skin” in an attempt to be more “white adjacent.” This is even happening to someone with a long history of observing Black culture, like Beyoncé Knowles. People have seen recent photos of Beyoncé and some are convinced that she is bleaching her skin. They say this even though she looks just like she did when she was a child.

America is poised to celebrate the 96th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birth on Monday, January 20, 2025. (Actually, Dr. King’s birthday is January 15th, but it is celebrated on the 20th). Dr King’s birthday is the first national holiday celebrating an African American in the United States.
