Syria's new leaders vowed to create unity, but also hold to account the people who facilitated a half-century of Assad rule. Those calls for revenge added to the unease of many Syrian minorities, including U.S. partners in the fight against Isis who had to give up hard-won territory. Nick Schifrin reports.

Overnight in the occupied West Bank, a mosque was vandalized and set on fire by Israeli settlers. Attacks against Palestinians there have increased greatly since the Oct. 7 terror attacks. Israel describes the West Bank as one of seven fronts it is fighting on, stoked by Iranian support of militants. Nick Schifrin reports from the Jenin refugee camp, the epicenter of much of the violence.

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has brought relative calm in northern Israel, but the road to recovery is long. Tens of thousands have been displaced due to Hezbollah’s rocket attacks. Producer Karl Bostic traveled to Metula and Kiryat Shmona along the border with Lebanon to meet families who finally got to visit their homes after 14 months of war. Jeffery Brown has the story.

The U.N. human rights office says Israel’s operations in Gaza have pushed the health care system “to the brink of total collapse” and may be a violation of international law. Israel accuses Hamas of integrating into hospitals and using staff as shields to attack Israel. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he intends to resign as prime minister and the leader of the Liberal Party after a rapid decline in his approval rating. A new party leader will be selected by March and will face a formidable challenge in the upcoming elections. Amna Nawaz discussed more with Roland Paris.

France’s foreign minister said three French detainees being held by Iran face conditions that fall within the definition of torture. Human rights groups have long decried how Iran treats its prisoners. Nick Schifrin and producers spoke to protestors inside Iran, especially female demonstrators, who have paid a heavy price in and out of jail, but remain undaunted.

President-elect Trump’s allies in Congress proposed a new bill dubbed ‘Make Greenland Great Again.' It's meant to expedite a negotiation process with Denmark, which protects Greenland’s autonomy, given Trump's repeated desire to buy the Arctic territory. Greenland’s prime minister said that while the massive island is not for sale, Greenland would work with the U.S. Nick Schifrin reports.

Some of President-elect Trump's nominees for Cabinet posts were in Senate committees for one of the busiest days of confirmation hearings in U.S. history. Amna Nawaz reports on the hearing for Secretary of State nominee Marco Rubio and Trump's CIA director pick, John Ratcliffe.

The negotiations that led to the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement took months and months. At the center of the talks representing the United States was Brett McGurk, the White House coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa. He joined Amna Nawaz to discuss the deal.

President Trump vowed that the State Department will have an "America first" foreign policy. Nick Schifrin discussed how the world is responding to Trump's inauguration with Jens Stoltenberg, the most recent secretary general of NATO who will become the chairman of the Munich Security Conference next month.
