South Africa is in the middle of what could be the biggest transformation of its labour landscape in decades. Earlier this year, the Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, introduced the Employment Laws Amendment Bill and the Labour Relations Amendment Bill of 2025 — signalling a major shift toward recognising gig workers as employees for the very first time. But while this promises protections like minimum wage, paid leave and the right to organise, it also raises a deeper question: is legal recognition enough if the people it aims to protect don't fully understand their rights? CNBC Africa’s Prudence Makhubalo spoke to Nkosinathi Mahlangu, Youth Employment Specialist at the Momentum Group Foundation about what these labour law changes really mean, and whether we are preparing young people not just to participate in the economy.
