Thanksgiving is a divisive holiday. Whether you make that train/plane/bicycle/hitchhike journey with a smile or a frown all depends on how much of a fan you are of fatty foods and family feuds. There’s a lot to be unsure of as you head home for the holidays: How much Trump merch will Uncle Jim be wearing? Will Grandma cry when Cousin Katie brings her new girlfriend? How many apology calls will Mom have me make on Friday? But, for the worst of us Columbians, there’s one question that reigns supreme: How can I make sure everybody knows how cool and sexy it is that I live in New York City?

Of the 12, November is the superior month. The foliage is striking, the temperature is crisp, and finals season is just far enough away that we need not yet care. As a Scorpio, I would know. It’s my season. But it doesn’t take a Scorpio to know that the best day of November is the highly anticipated last Thursday of the month: Thanksgiving. Cue the Macy’s parade, thin slices of unseasoned turkey, canned cranberry sauce that expires in 2057, and the annual three-generation family walk. There’s also the much-anticipated question of “What are you thankful for?” I would say my loving family, devoted friends, cottage cheese, the option to P/D/F a class, and the 2024 series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Some may say Thanksgiving takes the cake—or even better, the pie! (My dad thought that one was funny).

More than any other actor, the U.S. military now sets the terms of the university research landscape. In 2023, nearly half of federal research funding went to the Department of Defense, ranking it first among all agencies that supply academic research grants, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Science Foundation. Why is this the case?
