An historical journey To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Mennonite migration from Imperial Russia to Manitoba, Filmmaker Dale Hildebrand has created a special labour-intensive project — a documentary titled Where the Cottonwoods Grow that details the arrival of the region’s largest ethnoreligious group. “Going into this, I had no idea of . . . the depth of history that is involved in this journey that took place,” says Hildebrand. “[The film is] really trying to show a sweeping journey, an epic feel. The Mennonite Heritage Village Museum (MHV) has opened an exciting new exhibit titled “Mennonite Reflections: Arriving in Manitoba 150 Years Ago.” This engaging display takes visitors on a journey from the Mennonites' life in Russia to their settlement in Manitoba, highlighting the many challenges they faced along the way. The exhibit is thoughtfully divided into seven sections, each representing a different chapter of the Mennonite story. Doerksen notes,“ One of these Kopeck coins could buy a cow back in the day, which is pretty incredible to think about.” Poetry plays a significant role in the exhibit, with verses written by Gerhard B. Doerksen reflecting the emotional journey of leaving behind familiar lives. Doerksen points out the vital role these communities played in assisting the newcomers as they settled in their new home. The section on Red River carts emphasizes the importance of these vehicles, which were instrumental in transporting the Mennonites from their landing site near Niverville to Shantz Immigration Sheds. The availability of trains made it possible for multiple families to relocate together, easing the transition to their new lives. Upon arrival, the Mennonites faced severe challenges, including a harsh winter and agricultural setbacks. Many arrived too late in the season to plant crops, and a grasshopper plague compounded their struggles. Doerksen says learning of their survival those first years, “Is truly inspiring.” As the exhibit continues, it highlights how the Mennonites preserved their traditions in their new communities, creating village layouts reminiscent of their old homes in Russia. Northbound Brandt St. will be closed for eight days starting Monday. The closures are planned for October 7 to 15. The City of Steinbach informs that northbound Brandt St. from Reimer Ave. to Ellice Ave. will be closed to all traffic, and northbound traffic should take Reimer to Main. At the intersection of Brandt St., Woodhaven Ave, and Friesen Ave, the road will be closed. Then on Brant St. From Reimer to Woodhaven, the road will be closed allowing local traffic only. The City informs there have been similar repairs earlier this summer, but those were contained to the catch basins themselves or very short pipe lengths leaving the catch basins. “These two repairs require several meters of pipe to be repaired. These pipes run under the northbound travel lanes of Brandt St. and cannot be repaired safely without closing the road.” The scheduling of these repairs were to fall in line with the contractors other paving projects around town. “The plan is to have the pipes repaired and backfilled by mid to late next week, with concrete and asphalt restoration immediately after.
