Bradshaw Mountain High graduate selected as one of 20 Arizona students selected as 2024 Flinn scholars

On May 19, 1949, Richard and Lynne Tolksdorf were married in Maquoketa, Iowa. Their marriage has been filled with adventure and love. They settled in Long Beach, California where the majority of their seven children were raised and went to school.

In an environment where thousands of robust men had populated the towns of the Nineteenth Century American West, women were a scarcity for the most part. Mountain men, cowboys, ranchers, desperados, and miners rode west to seek their fortunes, while either unmarried or having left their significant others back East to save them from a hostile land that fought civilization at every turn. These hard working men sought solace and relaxation from what was frequently the only female contingent present in the rough and tumble western towns, The Ladies of the Lamplight.

In 1941, an Imperial Japanese Navy submarine shelled an oil field near Santa Barbara and the Los Padres National Forest. Many experienced firefighters were away fighting in the Second World War and there was widespread concern that wildfires, whether started by America's enemies at the time, or careless neighbors, could not only ravage the west coast, but become a serious nation-wide problem. Walt Disney allowed animal characters from the popular “Bambi” movie to be used in a successful wildfire prevention poster for one year only. The Forest service's fire prevention campaign needed a new illustrated animal ambassador.

Suze's Prescott Center for the Arts (SPCA), a cornerstone of cultural enrichment and education in the community, announces a significant leadership transition. Robyn Allen, who has served with distinction as the executive director, will be retiring effective June 30.

At Yavapai College's Osher Life Long Learning Institute (OLLI), members bring a wealth of experiences they enjoy sharing with others through a variety of classes. A perfect example of this is what Dirk and Lois Stringham have experienced among the Navajos and now share in OLLI classes. It was a camping trip forty-five years ago with their young children that stimulated the Stringham's interest in the Navajo people and Navajo culture. That trip was a day-long tour of back roads on the Navajo Reservation, led by a guide who brought his children, who spoke no English. It turned out to be a memorable day for everyone, and the beginning of life-long friendships.
