There has been much talk about gender equity in Jamaica. Whereas gender affairs have been elevated to ministerial oversight, we have a lot of ground to make up, especially in the field of sports, to include media coverage. Televised media coverage of sporting events focuses heavily on track and field, football, and cricket. Netball, arguably the country’s number one team sport, has been limited to brief video clips on our nightly television news. It’s no secret that netball has brought perennial glory to the country and it’s a travesty that live televised coverage is almost nil.
The Gleaner Company (Media) Limited is a long-standing Jamaican newspaper publishing enterprise, renowned for its comprehensive coverage of local and international news. Established in 1834, the company's flagship product is The Gleaner, a widely respected morning broadsheet published six days a week.
The Gleaner's coverage spans a diverse range of topics, with a particular focus on government and politics, sports, crime, entertainment news, and world affairs. Readers rely on The Gleaner for in-depth reporting and analysis of evolving stories, breaking news, government announcements, event coverage, and press releases, ensuring they stay informed about the latest developments shaping Jamaica and the world.
In addition to the daily broadsheet, The Gleaner Company also publishes the Sunday Gleaner, a weekend edition, and The Star, an evening tabloid catering to a different audience segment. The company's reach extends beyond Jamaica's borders, with weekly overseas editions available in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, serving the Jamaican diaspora communities in those regions.
