Government these days is less representative and more authoritative than at any time in American history. More and more they seek to bend the national will to their purpose rather than harvest it as expressed by the nation. Leadership has been defined as, “seeing a parade and stepping in front of it.” But increasingly our leaders seek to direct the parade by controlling the information available to the people in it rather than going in the direction the parade is already headed. We saw it in spades this week just ending.

It yet another overreach, the outgoing administration, ostensibly “the Biden administration,” is planning to ban offshore drilling in a massive area of federal land . “The ban would solidify Biden's legacy on addressing climate change and his goal to decarbonize the U.S. economy by 2050.” They seem to think this is an executive order that cannot be reversed. That seems quite specious to me, but I'll leave it up to the lawyers and the courts. What I do know is it is an audacious plan to deal with an issue where what we don't know far outweighs what we do. (And where what we do know is often presented in a grossly misleading fashion.) If you think the covid lockdowns were an extreme reaction based on little science, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Imagine yourself an Obama Democrat. You believe that history turned some sort of corner when Obama was elected – that the first and now the second Trump elections are interruptions in the progress of history you have always desired. It is immensely sad that such a notion is based on race in a fashion that is exactly opposite of Martin Luther King's so well-stated dream . (Judging by character, not color.) But if that is your belief you are desperate to “get the nation back on the ‘right' path.” You are willing to do anything (isn't that a hallmark of a lack of character?) to get back to where you think things ought to be – even if that means terrifying the nation into submission. After all, it worked with the first interruption.

How do you solve a problem? Particularly a problem that has evolved into a major crisis. Think about a big crisis, a really big one – how do you deal with it? Something like the fires ravaging Southern California as I write. What are the first, second and third priorities? A crisis that large cannot be solved in a matter of hours, or even a day, or a week. Even when the crisis is under control, the problem is still there and must be solved lest the crisis present itself again. How do you ensure that the entire process is seen through?
