Sarah has been back from Los Angeles for a few weeks now and her friends are finally trickling back to Boston after the end of their freshman year. Sarah had spent the last year working at a diner on Melrose, spending her weekends on the Sunset Strip, barely seeing her best friends since high school graduation. But, Mika is turning 19, so the high school posse’s all back together to celebrate.

The Yale women’s basketball team fell yet again in a low-scoring contest against Merrimack 45–50.

Last November, I published my most controversial article to date: Why I’m not going to the Yale-Harvard game. That article is a troll, so don’t bother reading it if you haven’t already. I still endorse the opinion entirely — you should be comfortable opting out of involuntary events just because you don’t want to go — but let’s be real: I can’t convince anyone to conquer their fear of missing out by writing an op-ed.

Yale’s Intramural sports program is one of my favorite single aspects of Yale College. It encapsulates everything that makes Yale great in my eyes: friendly competition, residential college spirit and Bulldogs showing we are more than just our academic talents — we are also pretty damn athletic.

On Monday morning, Oct. 21, students were either overjoyed or devastated when opening their inbox to find an email from the athletics office announcing the results of The Game’s ticket lottery. Some years, tickets have been available to Yalies on a first-come, first-serve basis. But unlike the much better Yale Bowl, which can fit over 70,000 spectators, Harvard Stadium can only seat 30,000. Instead of reducing the number of general admissions tickets, Harvard cut the number of student tickets available to Yalies. Abby got a ticket, and Alyse did not. We are still friends, but neither of us thinks this new ticket system is a good thing.

At noon, the Yale football team (6–3, 3–3 Ivy) will look to pull off an upset against a heavily favored Harvard team (8–1, 5–1 Ivy) that is looking to end their season as sole champions of the Ivy League.

Since stepping down, the former Yale president has joined the boards of three organizations and become a Sterling professor.

IN The Game 2024

One of the most politically pressing discussions I’ve had in class this semester was about a fourth-century saint: Augustine of Hippo. In his book “City of God,” Augustine writes that Roman society, what he calls the Earthly City, is governed by civic religion. The nation’s many gods give the citizens an overwhelming sense of the public good and a desire to sacrifice themselves for their country. The Eternal City on the other hand, the City of God, is private. Its followers care for their private conscience and for the purity of their relationship with God. Augustine believed in heavenly ends and thus thought that civic religion paled in comparison to the one true faith. If you’re skeptical of eternal life, though, earthly ends seem a lot more appealing. There’s still value in embracing humility and meekness as means to that end. But in an age of isolation, addiction and loneliness, might it be worth encouraging citizenship, patriotism and sacrifice?
