The second half of NHRA's 75th anniversary season of Mission Foods Drag Racing Series starts this weekend in Sonoma, which traded places with Seattle this year to be the first event in a two-race Western Swing. (Do we miss Bandimere Speedway? You bet we do.)
The 38th annual DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals had more twists and turns than the road course that surrounds its quarter-mile dragstrip. NHRA's 11th race of its 75h anniversary Mission Foods Drag Racing Series season featured victories by reigning Top Fuel champion Doug Kalitta against local favorite Jasmine Salinas in her first career final round, Jordan Vandergriff's second win in his first season driving a John Force Racing Chevrolet SS and an all-Elite Motorsports Pro Stock final where Greg Stanfield earned a repeat visit to the Winner's Circle over teammate and six-time champ Erica Enders.
As this is NHRA's 75th year of competition, being formed by Wally Parks in 1951, different stars of the sport are being celebrated at each individual race. Central California's Gary Scelzi was the chosen star of this event, and it's doubtful anyone else could have repped the series better. As is the case this season, Scelzi was trotted before the media on Friday afternoon before the late afternoon and evening qualifying sessions. Scelzi being Scelzi, he talked about his career, about the competitors he faced as he notched both Top Fuel and Funny Car titles.
NHRA'S 37th visit to Seattle Raceways is the 12th event in the Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, as it barrels towards the close of its “regular” season when initial championships in the sanction's 75th anniversary season take place.
