Researching the history of power pop on the internet can be a dizzying endeavor. In no time at all, you’ll find yourself tumbling down a digital formicary of priggish nitpicking and didactic bluster—as well as plenty of good-natured music nerd-ery. You’ll encounter the kind of people who differentiate between jangle pop and power pop and pop rock; people who grimace when they see an Emmit Rhodes LP or a Velvet Crush CD in the used bins; people who can name 20 Fountains of Wayne songs without naming that one; and people who will tell you about how power pop has long been critically adored but rarely commercially successful; they might even use the phrase “cult favorite.” In other words: These are my people.
