In the wake of confusion and frustration stemming from the local Board of Elections handling of absentee ballots, New Hanover County engaged the Parker Poe law firm to review the election offices’ financial needs, practices, and communications. The Board of Elections declined to participate for the time being; election officials say they weren’t consulted before the county hired the firm and are unsure if this review is within “the scope of the county’s authority.”

A former New Hanover County sheriff's deputy is facing felony strangulation charges. The deputy had resigned in October, not long after being demoted.

At the beginning of this year, Captain Mike Fanta put his name to a formal complaint against Wilmington Police Chief Donny Williams. That led to a $75,000 third-party investigation in Williams' leadership, and pushback from the Black community who defended the city's first Black police chief against Fanta, other officers, and others who joined in those criticisms.

Q: This year it was announced there would be no parade in Wilmington to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. What happened?A: Organizers didn’t go into detail, but suggested the overlap with Inauguration Day could be a “conflict, and potentially a security concern” for law enforcement. Police clarified that there are no threats on their radar — but they do have staffing concerns because they've committed officers to help with security for the inauguration in Washington D.C., as they’ve done in the past.
