Opioids are medications used to treat acute pain. While effective when used as directed by a doctor, opioid abuse has skyrocketed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Opioids are now the main driver of drug overdose deaths in the U.S. Dr. Christopher Eberlein poses in the Gundersen Tri-State Ambulance bay on Tuesday. For the past decade, Eberlein has been at the forefront of overdose prevention efforts in La Crosse County. Gundersen's "leave-behind kit" contains two doses of Narcan, a pocket mask for CPR, test strips and a resource pamphlet. Tri-State Ambulance workers are encouraged to distribute the pouches at their discretion upon leaving the scene. Dr. Christopher Eberlein opens a Gundersen "leave-behind kit," which contains overdose reversal medicine Narcan along with other life-saving supplies on Tuesday Jan. 28. The pouches, which are carried in all Tri-State ambulances, are one of several measures that have been implemented the organization in an effort to prevent fatal overdoses.
