The Warren County District Attorney who opened fire on fleeing murder suspects in a Smithville neighborhood in November was arraigned in DeKalb Criminal Court last week, with his attorney entering a “not guilty” plea on his behalf. Attorney General 43-year-old Christopher Robert Stanford of McMinnville did not appear in court, but his attorney, Jeff Cherry, entered the plea on his client’s behalf after filing a waiver of appearance and arraignment.

Several people were sentenced in DeKalb Criminal court last week, on charges ranging from drug and possession charges, to soliciting a minor.

A couple of young deer hunters made a gruesome find over the weekend after a decomposed body was found locked in a locker hidden in a wooded rural farm area. The discovery has local and state investigators trying to identify the remains and determine whether the find is linked to the case of a missing woman from 2022.

The DeKalb County School System has announced the 2024-25 Teachers of the Year at the building level of the five schools in the county. These educators were chosen by their peers and are as follows:

The Smithville Board of Mayor and Aldermen is considering a companies offer to provide automated school zone photo (speed camera) enforcement at no cost to the city. The technology is aimed at freeing up police units while clamping down of speeding through school zones.
