With the weather cooling, the BHS Swim Cats took the plunge last Thursday in their first meet of the season. The team went up against Thomas County Central, with the local YMCA providing their indoor pool for the meet.

The Salvation Army was busy on Friday morning, distributing Thanksgiving food boxes. Each of the 110 boxes contained all the essentials for a Thanksgiving dinner, from a turkey breast to frozen pie shells, as well as a Bible. According to Salvation Army Director Merreann McDonald, the price of each box was roughly $80.

Memories Car Club is preparing for its annual holiday nursing home visit, with this year being its seventh. In addition to the cookies the club delivers, this year saw 3rd-grade students from Hutto Elementary making Christmas cards to go with them. As Spring Creek Charter Academy continues to grow, so too does its sports programs. Currently, the school has middle school and JV basketball teams. So far this season, the middle school boys have played seven games, with one win, while the middle school girls have yet to win. According to Coach Shawntray Session, there is currently only a JV Boys team “ due to the lack of interest in the upper grades.”

This year marks new leadership for the Bainbridge High School wrestling team, with Jacob Floyd having been named the new head coach.

A sizeable crowd flocked to Chason Park last Thursday night for this year’s Christmas at Chason, which has taken the place of the Yuletide Jubilee. The event had a variety of activities to choose from, including putt-putt golf, a mini-train ride for children, a photo booth, as well as pictures with Santa Claus. The Decatur County Sheriff’s Department, Bainbridge Public Safety and the Salvation Army all handed out free food and drinks to people, while Christ United Methodist Church and the Refinery had arts and crafts booths.

The Decatur County Commissioners met for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Tuesday morning. The first item on the agenda was a request from Missy Rollins and her Beacon on Boulevard community kitchen. Rollins discussed her plans for the kitchen, which aims to provide meals to those in need, and clarified that it would not be a homeless shelter. The current plans require demolition and restoration on the property; Rollins was requesting a waving of the landfill fees, which county administrator Alan Thomas confirmed the organization, a 501(c)(3), was eligible for. The commissioners expressed support for the project, and voted to approve the fee waiver.

Members of the Bainbridge Rotary Club met for their weekly meeting at the Kirbo Center on Tuesday. The guest speaker was Paula Hurt, who spoke about Woodmen Life. Specifically, she spoke about the fraternal apsects of their programs. These include scholarships and student debt aid.

Just over a month ago, the Georgia Court of Appeals issued its ruling in favor of the Safer Human Medicine primate facility’s bond validation. While SHM issued a statement expressing pleasure with the ruling, District Attorney Joe Mulholland made it clear he intended to appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court. Mulholland has since filed his appeal, and both Safer Human Medicine and the Decatur County-Bainbridge Industrial Development Authority have issued their responses, both requesting that it be denied.
