This week at Tryon Theatre is “Normal” (2026), a comedic action thriller that clips along at a breakneck pace, packed to the proverbial brim with quips, highly stylized fight sequences, and the near constant rhythm of gunfire. Directed by the talented Ben Wheatley, an English director with a flair for a humorously gritty tone, “Normal” stars Bob Odenkirk, who uses his delightfully “normal” everyman appearance to hilarious ends. He cuts the perfect image of weary, unassuming, middle-aged malaise. Of course, no Odenkirk role would be his without a healthy dose of wry, dry sarcasm, qualities on display in spades throughout this film's compact and compelling narrative.

This week at The Tryon Theatre is “Masters of the Universe” (Knight 2026), a modern interpretation of the 1980's Mattel property, originally comics and toys, that birthed an animated series, and a 1987 live action feature film. For decades this franchise has been a hit with audiences, an admittedly cheesy world of fantasy, but one so self aware and winking with its silliness that the audience gets to laugh with it, not at it. This newest film is no departure from the established tone of the preceding works, positively steeped in charming goofiness, a delightfully unserious thrill ride. “Masters of the Universe” absolutely belongs under that increasingly combined umbrella of sci-fi and fantasy (replete with advanced technology, sorcery, and all manner of strange creatures), yet despite these genre trappings, this film is, above all else, a comedy. Not only does the film have explicit moments of comedy within the dialogue and narrative, it also hopes to engender laughter from the film's more “intense” moments too, leaning so heavily into the hyper stylized spectacle, that it also becomes a source of intentional humor.
