The Wolverines’ Boys soccer team is full of skilled players this year. With 16 varsity players and nine junior varsity and Brian Goodremont as head coach these athletes are focusing on the basics and are working hard to get to state.

With its simple set and complex story line, “Our Town,” written by Thornton Wilder took Broadway by storm in 1938. Fellow playwright Edward Albee called it the greatest American play ever written, and it opens at the San Juan Community Theatre Oct. 4.

Throughout the course of his life, composer Morten Lauridsen has received a number of awards for his music from across the nation. He will receive one more award that hits close to heart and home, the Friday Harbor Film Festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Social Justice Collective is holding a fundraiser at the Grange on Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. to assist one of the many families, the AbuKhaleds, currently caught in the cross fire in Gaza.

Filmmaking is an unusual direction for young people, but the Friday Harbor Film Festival has, since its eary beginnings, worked to encourage students. The Young Filmmakers Showcase, which featurs two categories, 13-17-year-olds and 18-26-year-olds, is one such way, offering free tickets to youth is another.

In a first-time appearance in the San Juans, the Andrew Collins Trio will be playing at the Community Theatre Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Concertgoers will be treated to a showcase of popular collision between folk, new acoustic roots, chamber grass, Celtic and jazz, not to mention a dizzying number and energetic interplay of instruments on stage.
