With temperatures dipping into the 30’s on a cold night at English Stadium this past Friday (Nov. 29), top-ranked Altavista faced a stiff challenge from #3 Buffalo Gap in the Region 1B championship game. Playing in their closest game since their season opener, Altavista persevered through the weather and some key injuries to pull out a hard fought 32-20 victory over the Bison to claim their second straight region title. Buffalo Gap achieved a rare feat against the Colonels this season by getting on the scoreboard first as late in the opening frame Bison quarterback Colby Yeago capped off an impressive long drive with a 3-yard TD run for a 6-0 lead. Altavista responded as Colonels sophomore quarterback Cooper Brooks ran through the heart of the Bison defense on a 25-yard TD sprint to tie the game with only one second remaining in the first quarter of action. Running back Ladainian Stone punched in the two-point conversion to give the Colonels an 8-6 lead. The two teams continued to battle back & forth in the second quarter as the Bison got a 15-yard TD run from Colby Yeago to go into halftime with a 12-8 advantage.

Football fans gathered on a chilly, blustery night under the lights at English Stadium this past Friday (Nov. 22) to witness their beloved Colonels turn in another dominant performance with a 64-8 playoff victory over Sussex Central in the Region 1B semifinals.
Local student athletes from Altavista & William Campbell were honored this past week for their efforts for the Fall sports season. The Altavista volleyball team, who won the Region 1B championship with a stellar 17-7 season had several players receive postseason accolades which included:
The Altavista Colonels varsity boys basketball team tipped-off their 23-game schedule for the 2024-25 hoops season last Tuesday night (Dec. 10) with a non-district road showdown with county rival Rustburg.
The Altavista varsity basketball team is still searching for their first win of the young season as they played a trio games this past week. First up, Altavista fell to Prince Edward 71-25 at home last Monday (Dec. 9) in a non-district contest. Prince Edward (4-0) nailed ten three-pointers enroute to the win to remain undefeated.
The Altavista boys basketball team outlasted Amherst County this past Thursday night (Dec. 19) 73-67 in a non-district hoops clash. The Colonels used a huge 27-point second quarter to sprint out to an early lead while knocking down nine total three-pointers in the road win. Freshman guard Jontez Lee led the way with a team-high 18 points while Christian Garvin scored 16 points and Spencer Fisher (15 points) who hit a trio from beyond the arc.
The Altavista football team recently completed another memorable season on the gridiron with a 12-1 record which featured the Dogwood District crown and a second consecutive region title. This week the VHSL announced postseason honors with Altavista well represented with ten players earning recognition. Leading the way for the program is Head coach Matthew Deloach who was named Region 1B Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Senior running back Ladainian Stone was named the Region 1B Offensive Player of the Year. Stone was one of the most dynamic players in the state as he rushed for 1,802 yards while accounting for 40 total TD’s.
The Altavista boys basketball squad continued their recent road odyssey by starting off the new year competing in the 18th annual Chance Harmon Classic.
