A First Alert Weather Day has been issued for today as lake effect snow and winds will impact travel conditions. Snow increases along the northwest wind belts throughout the day with moderate to heavy intensities of fluffy accumulating snow. Snowfall rates could range 1-2″ per hour at times. This will continue through tomorrow morning. Roads will becoming slippery and blowing snow will cause poor visibility! Winter Storm warnings have been for Gogebic, Ontonagon, Houghton, Keweenaw, Baraga, Marquette, Alger, and Schoolcraft counties where impacts will be most hazardous. Winds will become stronger with gusts of 25-35mph causing blowing snow. Snowfall amounts will range 4-8″ in the west an eastern U.P. The higher terrain of the Western U.P. will get around a foot, the high terrain of Baraga and Western Marquette counties will range 8-12″, and 12-18″ for portions of Alger and Schoolcraft counties. The lower elevations near Lake Superior like the city of Marquette will have less with amounts ranging 3-6″. It will depend on where the lake effect bands set up meaning if a prominent band pushes farther into Marquette county amounts will increase. Winds and snow taper off tomorrow. It will be colder with wind chills in the 20s below zero tomorrow morning.
