The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) completed testing for the 2024 model year.Of the 21 vehicles it announced results for this month, 19 earned one of two awards.Now that testing is complete, the IIHS says a total of 48 cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans earned its Top Safety Pick+ award and 56 came in one notch below but still good enough to qualify as Top Safety Pick recipients.Here are all of the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award winners of 2024 by category:

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted nearly all aspects of life, including the cost of buying a car or truck.According to iSeeCars, used cars surged by an average of $7,000 (a 28% increase) in 2021, and they’ve held fairly steady since then.As 2024 came to a close, the average cost of a used car in America was $29,934.While the overall average has stabilized—the average price of a car that’s between 1 and 5 years old has changed just $750 since June of 2024—some segments of the market have posted noticeable declines.

It’s all but a foregone conclusion that the Ford F-Series of pickup trucks will take the title as the best-selling vehicle in America, and 2024’s sales results confirm the victory.As has been the case for as long as most of us can remember, American buyers flock to pickup trucks like Gordon Ramsay to food-based television shows.So it comes as little surprise that the Chevrolet Silverado lands in second place, too.After those top two, though, there are several noteworthy results.

For the 48th straight year, the Ford F-Series was the best-selling vehicle lineup in the United States in 2024.The Chevrolet Silverado series of trucks came in second, as it usually does, but the vehicle that landed in third place is a bit of a surprise.Taking over from Ram was the Toyota RAV4, followed by the Tesla Model Y and Honda CR-V.

With 475,193 units sold, the Toyota RAV4 took home the trophy as the best-selling new SUV in America in 2024.That’s an impressive performance, and it represents the third year in a row that Toyota’s compact utility vehicle has increased in sales.It’s even better than the Ram pickup that had been the third-best-selling vehicle in America for the last several years prior.The RAV4 is far from the only SUV or crossover that sold well last year.
