Nucor Steel West Virginia has a new leader: Johnny Jacobs, who is replacing John Farris, who is retiring. The mill is being built along W.Va. 2 and the Ohio River in Apple Grove, Mason County, about 28 miles north of downtown Huntington.

Arch Resources and Consol Energy announced, on Aug. 21, 2024, they will merge to form Core Natural Resources to be based in Consol’s home of Canonsburg, Washington County Pennsylvania. Arch operates the Mountain Laurel Complex at Sharples in Logan County, the Beckley Complex at Eccles, Raleigh County, West Virginia, and the Leer and Leer South mines in Grafton and Philippi, West Virginia, respectively. Consol's Bailey Mine in southwestern Pennsylvania extends into Marshall County, West Virginia.
