“Global milk production is beginning to stabilize, and new cheese plants coming online will allow production to ramp up and stocks to build into next year,” the MW warned. “Milk production among the world's top five exporters increased 0.4% in September from the prior year, indicating a change in trend following a slight gain in August after 12 consecutive months of deficits relative to the prior year. Additionally, expansion to U.S. cheese processing plants by the middle of 2025 is expected to increase cheese output by 20 million pounds per day, which assuming steady demand would be sufficient to lift cheese stocks to prior-year volumes with less than one week's output.”
Butter and cheese stocks fell in October, with the cheese inventory down for the eighth month in a row. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's latest cold storage report showed Oct. 31 butter holdings at 267.5 million pounds, down 35.8 million pounds or 11.8% from the September inventory, which was revised up 355,000 pounds. They were up 27.4 million pounds or 11.4%, however, from October 2023.

Farm milk prices continue to fall. The Agriculture Department announced the November Federal Order benchmark Class III price at $19.95 per hundredweight, down $2.90 from October, $2.80 above November 2023, but the lowest Class III price since July. It put the 11 month average at $18.92, up from $17.11 a year ago, and compares to $22.09 in 2022.
