A new report from the National Education Association reveals that teacher pay is failing to keep pace with inflation, with salaries falling 5% over the last decade when adjusted. While nominal average salaries saw a slight increase, the "teacher pay penalty" compared to other college graduates reached a record high in 2024, according to the Economic Policy Institute. The report highlights significant disparities, with 35% of districts offering starting salaries over $50,000, but 7% having maximum salaries below $60,000. Teachers in states with collective bargaining earn approximately $16,000 more. Salary growth and living wage comparisons vary widely by state, with Florida ranking 50th in average pay. The overall picture indicates a profession struggling to attract and retain talent due to insufficient financial incentives and persistent pay gaps.

The NEA report shows there is still work to do with teacher pay in this country, while providing plenty of data for those looking to get a clearer state-by-state picture.

A new research brief from the Albert Shanker Institute highlights "time" as the crucial, yet often neglected, resource for teachers. Titled "On The Clock: The Centrality of Time in Teacher Work," the paper argues U.S. teachers already work extensive hours, more than most international peers, with much of their school day dedicated solely to instruction. Policy leaders frequently introduce new initiatives without providing teachers adequate time to understand, plan, or implement them effectively. This systemic lack of dedicated time for preparation and collaboration undermines school improvement efforts, makes the teaching profession less attractive, and directly hinders high-quality instruction. For reforms to succeed, the study concludes, policymakers must consider not just the "what" and "how," but critically, the "when" of teacher implementation.
