The Gloucester County School Board unanimously elected Leonne Arsenovic and Anita Parker as chair and vice chair, respectively, during its annual organizational meeting held Tuesday night in the T.C. Walker Education Center auditorium. “Thank you all very much,” said Arsenovic. “I appreciate the confidence.”

Perrindise Marina and Club, formerly Crown Pointe Marina, is currently undergoing renovations to the property located on Cooks Landing Lane, Hayes. The property is owned by Mac and J.C. Casale and Dean Tsamouras. Construction of a new restaurant, a second location of Hole in the Wall (the first is on Gwynn’s Island), is also in the works, with an anticipated completion by late this year.

More than five years after Rick’s Country Store in Sassafras closed its doors for the final time, the location has welcomed Pointers Country Mart, with a soft opening held on Friday. The store opened its doors at 5 a.m. and a steady influx of customers started to roll in around 6:30 a.m. “We are just excited,” said the Pointers Country Mart owner Niral Patel regarding the opening of the store.

The Gloucester Union Relief Association of Missionary Baptist held “A Day of Celebration” in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 20, at the First United Baptist Church, Gloucester, which focused on “Celebrating God, Dr. King and the Struggle.”

The Gloucester High School wrestling team held its last home meet of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in the GHS gymnasium. The meet was also Senior Night for Jackzel Quinones, Aiden Sheesley, Christian Hartz and J.R. Jones.The Dukes won over the Phoebus Phantoms by a score of 54-18 and the Bethel Bruins, 59-24.

A massive fire destroyed a home in the 8700 block of Glass Road in Hayes in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 22. Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue responded shortly after 1 a.m. with two engines and a tanker to the blaze, which was initially called in as a chimney fire. The York County Department of Fire and Life Safety responded mutual aid with a tanker. A total of 25 people were on scene between all of the agencies.
