A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa through this morning. Dense fog will reduce visibility to one-quarter mile or less. In addition, temperatures in the upper 20s to low 30s will cause the fog to freeze on roads and surfaces, making them slippery at times. If you’re traveling this morning, be prepared to allow extra time. Icy roads and low visibility are a dangerous combination.
We are tracking two systems that have the potential to bring measurable snow to parts of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa this week. The first could bring about 1 to 2 inches of snow Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening. The second will be a bit stronger and could produce 2 to 4 inches of snow across much of Minnesota on Thursday. After Thursday, it will be cold and dry as we head through the upcoming weekend. As of right now, other than a few scattered snow showers, our longer-range models are keeping us relatively low key through Christmas. But we all know that can change. The weather team will be watching, and we’ll have updates as we get closer.
Snow will continue to develop from southwest to northeast across the region this afternoon. As of around 11:30am, snow was falling from Fairmont to Windom to Marshall. Light snow will likely reach the Mankato/North Mankato area by early afternoon and continue across much of the region through this afternoon, ending from west to east this evening. Overall snow accumulation will be around an inch, with slightly more possible in a few places, especially southwest of Mankato. Wind is not expected, so blowing snow will not be an issue. However, roads will be snow-covered and slippery this afternoon through this evening.
Get ready for more snow and slippery travel. We are tracking another system that will bring light snow to much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa late tonight and Thursday. As of right now, I think snowfall amounts will be around 1 inch, maybe a little more, in the Mankato/North Mankato area with heavier amounts to the northeast and lesser amounts to the south and west. Heaviest amounts will be along and north of I-94 where 3 to 6 inches is possible. Snow will start after midnight tonight, moving across the region from northwest to southeast through Thursday as part of a clipper system, which will bring gusts between 25 and 35 mph Thursday afternoon and evening, creating areas of blowing snow. After everything is said and done, cold air behind the front will knock highs into the teens to low 20s by Friday and Saturday. Our longer-range models keep us mostly dry with high temps climbing back into the mid 30s by Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The snow has ended, and the wind has died down, so now it’s nothin' but smooth sailing through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and beyond. Yesterday’s system did leave us with a bit of an icy goodbye. Temperatures are cold today, but we will gradually rebound into the upper 20s to low 30s by later this weekend. We are tracking a clipper system that could bring a few flurries on Monday, but overall, we are looking forward to great travel weather through the Christmas holiday.

The snow is behind us, the wind has settled down, and now it’s smooth sailing through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and beyond. Today will be partly cloudy and cold, with highs only reaching the low 20s. Fortunately, winds will stay light, so wind chill won’t be much of an issue.
Holiday travel weather is looking good with smooth sailing through Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and beyond. With snow on the ground and mild temperatures holding right around or a little below freezing, we’re in great shape for a white Christmas.
