MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The latest U.S. Drought Monitor was released today, and we continue to show improvement across much of Minnesota and Iowa.
Active pattern will bring rain, cold and even some snow next week

Happy Saturday! We are at the beginning of what is going to be a really nice weekend, especially considering it’s mid-November and we could easily have snow on the ground by now. Today will be sunny but breezy, with highs in the mid to upper 50s. Sunday will be sunny and slightly cooler, with highs in the low 50s. By early next week, our weather pattern will shift, and things will get much more active and interesting. Multiple systems are expected to bring the potential for heavy rain from Monday afternoon through Tuesday, followed by another system that could bring more rain and possibly even some snow from Wednesday into Thursday. Along with the snow will come the cold, as our high temperatures drop from 10 to 15 degrees above average this weekend to 10 to 15 degrees below average by midweek.
It’s Sunday and, while it will be a bit cooler than yesterday, I’ll argue that today will be the nicest day of the weekend simply because it won’t be as windy. Get out and enjoy it, because we have BIG changes coming our way next week. By tomorrow, our weather pattern will begin to shift, and things will get much more active and interesting. Multiple systems are expected to bring the potential for heavy rain from Monday afternoon through Tuesday, followed by another system that could bring more rain and possibly even some snow from Wednesday into Thursday. It’s going to get cold, too, as our high temperatures drop from 10 to 15 degrees above average this weekend to 10 to 15 degrees below average by midweek.
Rain will continue to move across the region from south to north throughout the afternoon and much of tonight. Rainfall amounts could be heavy, with many places getting 1 inch or more by the time it all winds down Tuesday morning. In addition to the rain, it will get windy and much colder, with temperatures falling through much of the day Tuesday. By Wednesday, a second wave of energy will bring scattered light snow showers to much of the region. While there won’t be much accumulation, it could be enough to make roads and surfaces a bit slick at times Wednesday morning. We are definitely going to make up for our warmer-than-average first half of November. By Wednesday and through the rest of the week, the weekend, and beyond, highs will only reach the low to mid 30s, with lows in the low to mid 20s.

After bringing 1 to 2 inches of rain to much of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa, our latest system has exited the area, leaving us with falling temperatures and strong 30 to 40 mph wind gusts. But we’re not quite done yet. A secondary wave of energy will move across the region late tonight and Wednesday, bringing light snow and strong wind gusts. These gusts could create areas of blowing snow at times, especially while snow is falling. Snow amounts will generally be less than an inch, but even this light accumulation could make roads and surfaces slick, potentially affecting the Wednesday morning commute. Amounts will be a bit higher, with 1 to 2 inches possible across far western Minnesota and the eastern Dakotas. After Wednesday, our weather pattern will settle down as we remain mostly dry with below-average temperatures through the rest of this week, the weekend, and most of next week.
