The Town of Bethany Beach has canceled its 2026 town council election, originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 12, because the four town council incumbents up for re-election were the only candidates to file to run this year.

On Saturday, Aug. 15, school children attending the Sixth Annual Laura Madara Back to School Fair will receive school supplies, free of charge, as well as lunch and resources, and be invited to play in a bounce house.

The color pink became associated with breast cancer awareness in the 1980s, after 36-year-old Peoria, Ill., resident and mother of two, Susan Komen, died of the disease at 36.

Speaking at the Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown might have been one of the most difficult tasks he's had, Gov. Matt Meyer told a roomful of visitors Tuesday morning, while there for the launch of a new program that provides produce grown by local farmers to the Western Sussex Boys & Girls Club in Seaford.

The Selbyville Town Council, at its Aug. 3 meeting, appointed Larry Lindenberger to fill the seat vacated by former councilman William Kirsch, who relocated.

Among accomplishments that make Bethany Beach Councilman Rich McHugh most proud, he said, is that during his first term he suggested presenting a monthly legislative report, which his colleagues now look forward to — especially since he ends it with an interesting or humorous tidbit.

Bethany Beach Town Councilman Mickey Hinman decided to run for a third, two-year term, eager to maintain the qualities of the town he finds so appealing and described as “family-oriented, not huge, not a lot of crazy stuff, just a great place to be with the family.”

To the delight of the Rev. Andy Ehlers, pastor at High Tide Church, there is now an associate pastor to help with his many responsibilities.

South Bethany resident Debbi Fanshel was surprised to find a couple of feathered visitors under her house: two baby turkey vultures that had apparently hatched from spotted, cream-colored eggs their mother laid on the ground, since the birds don't build nests, and that are now almost as big as the adults.

Among the accomplishments Bethany Beach Councilman Bob Rush is most proud of is “learning the ropes,” as he described it, after spending most of his career in the private sector, “then moving into learning how things operate and how they get done.”
