As high pressure continues to dominate across Britain, our notably mild festive period persists. However, a gradual change is on the horizon as we head towards the weekend, with fresher conditions developing from the north.

After a foggy period that has disrupted travel and sports fixtures, clearer conditions are developing across southern Britain. However, this improvement will be short-lived as Atlantic weather systems bring the potential for severe conditions as we move toward and into the New Year.

The severe winter weather in the North shows no sign of easing, as a still-deepening depression brings further snow and strong winds to many areas, before clearing into the North Sea on Monday. Cold conditions are expected to persist well into next week.

Southern England continues with its rain, sleet and snow mix as SW England sees an Amber warning for snow into Wednesday evening. Very cold overnight with frost and ice.

Mean average temperatures have struggled to climb above freezing for much of Britain this month, making it the coldest start to January for 15 years. But milder air is now pushing in from the south-west, promising a thaw and some respite from the icy conditions.

An enduring anticyclone continues to dominate the UK's weather this week, bringing settled conditions to most areas before gradually drifting eastwards. While staying largely dry, away from the far NW, foggy patches and overnight frosts remain likely.

High pressure remains in charge across much of the UK, bringing a continuation of the settled conditions. However, change is on the horizon as we head through the week, with a gradual shift towards more unsettled, and potentially even stormy weather.

Storm Eowyn will be over the UK and Ireland on Friday with warnings of rain, snow and damaging winds from Thursday night into Saturday. Prepare now and expect travel disruption.

While storm Herminia brings severe gales and persistent rain to our shores, its wind speeds won't match those of Storm Eowyn. However, its slow-moving nature means more sustained rainfall across the country.

With ex-storm 'Herminia' now losing its grip and moving steadily away into the North Sea, most areas of the country can look forward to improving conditions, with brighter spells developing widely through Thursday.
