The city’s annual Hometown Holiday Celebration began Friday evening with events all over town, and continued into the following day.
Councilman Jorel Davis abruptly resigned from the Belding City Council during a special meeting Monday night, a week after former City Councilman and Mayor Bruce Meyers resigned, leaving two vacancies for the remaining three council members to fill. Davis announced his resignation during “council comment” near the end of Monday evening's special meeting by reading a lengthy prepared statement.

County commissioners voted 5-2 on Tuesday to take no action and therefore retain the 100,000-ton annual cap on the maximum amount of solid waste that enters Pitsch Landfill in Orleans Township, as well as the current tipping fees of $1 per ton to Ionia County and 15 cents per ton to Orleans Township.Commissioner Phillip Hesche made the motion to “table the motion indefinitely,” thus retaining the current cap and tipping fees. He was seconded by Commissioner Scott Wirtz.

The city's Planning Commission held a brainstorming session Wednesday to generate ideas for future streets, sidewalks, trails and parks that will eventually be used to prepare a new master plan.Led by Williams and Works Planning Consultant Bradley Kotrba and titled Master Plan Complete Streets and Parks Workshop, the exercise was designed to inspire the commissioners to articulate their ideal vision for Ionia's future infrastructure and recreation.

Special Education Coordinator and Behavior Coach Jenn Woodhams informed the Ionia Public Schools Board of Education on Monday that each building in the district will receive “$1,450 worth of unified equipment for our young athletes ages 2 to 7,” with another $1,200 coming later “to use as they see fit.”Superintendent Benjamin Gurk and Board President Danielle Yokom both thanked Woodhams. There was no board discussion or action on the matter, listed on the agenda as “Unified Champion Schools expansion project.”

A Roseville man was sentenced to between 10 1/2 and 30 years in prison for rape, kidnapping and other crimes he committed in Ionia County's Orange Township on Halloween 2022. Kurt Gene Franklyn, 54, was charged with criminal sexual contact, home invasion, unlawful imprisonment, felony firearms possession and domestic assault stemming from the incident.
