Though football season may have ended in November, some of the players received recognition this holiday, as the Siuslaw Athletics Facebook page announced five players had received All-State recognition in OSAA's 3A classification.

The Siuslaw boys basketball team is back on the court after the holiday break, and January has largely brought positive results for the Vikings. In the early days of January, the Vikings achieved their biggest win of the season so far and performed well at the Bandon Dunes Tournament.

The girl's basketball team at Siuslaw is still on the hunt for their second win of the season, and though they didn't capture a win at the Bandon Dunes Tournament, they did put up their second-highest-scoring game of the season in a 31-43 loss against South Umpqua on Jan. 3.

Six schools traveled to Lincoln City for the Taft Invitational swim meet on Jan. 9, and the big winners from the event ended up being Taft High School and Newport

Siuslaw boys basketball has wrapped up the non-league portion of its schedule, and though they ended the early part of the season with a 9-5 record, the game against Sweet Home on Jan. 14 will leave a sour taste in the Vikings'mouths, as they narrowly lost 48-49.

Newport High School and Taft High School kicked off what will hopefully be an annual tradition out on the coast, as the two schools sent their swim teams to compete in the 1st Annual Battle on the Beach between the two programs.

It isn't just the Cubs who are in the pool competing for the Newport community. The Newport Swim Team (NST) was also in action recently and sent eleven swimmers to compete in the Lebanon Invitational, which was held Jan. 11-12.

For Siulsaw's girls basketball team, this season is about improving every day. Aaron McNeill is the Vikings'head coach, and though the team is still looking for its second win of the season, McNeill says the Siuslaw's fighting spirit never wavers, and there is always a commitment to improving within the squad.
