Our first experience with Siempre Tequila was not wholly memorable — and that fact was perhaps not lost on its Canadian brand owners, which, since that 2019 review, dumped its original distillery and upgraded to a new NOM, the well-regarded but fairly busy NOM 1414, Feliciano Vivanco. The new expressions also carry “vintage” production information that the old bottles lack.

Baltimore’s Old Line Spirits is known for sourcing quality American single malt from Middle West Spirits in Columbus, OH as they wait for their house spirits to come of age. Old Line recently expanded their portfolio to include rum under its new Case 1 branding. Staying true to their founding spirit, Case 1 offers a Dominican-sourced rum finished in Old Line single malt barrels. Case 1 Rum Whiskey Cask Finished starts with rum from an undisclosed distillery in the Caribbean Dominican that matured in ex-bourbon barrels for at least 7 years in the Dominican Republic. Following tropical maturation, the rum was transferred to Old Line single malt casks for at least an additional 3 years of maturation in Baltimore, giving it a total maturation of at least 10 years.

It may be somewhat old news, but the sale of Wilderness Trail to Campari Group in late 2022 in a deal valued up to $600 million remains the biggest declared American whiskey acquisition since Jim Beam sold to Suntory in 2014 (for 16 billion). Balcones traded hands to Diageo for an undisclosed sum not long after, followed by Skrewball (also to Campari) and then Blue Run to Molson Coors, making it seem as though the flood gates might open on American whiskey acquisitions in 2024, but big buys have been few this year.

The Nonino family has been distilling grappa and amari in Friuli, Italy since 1897, and has been helmed by three female distillers over its lifetime. The current boss is Francesca Nonino, the third generation of the Nonino family, and the creator of a new product, an Aperol-adjacent aperitivo that, of course, is also called Nonino. (The three generations of female distillers are represented on the label.) Like its forebear, the new product is unique due to its (partial) base of grappa, alongside grain neutral spirits.
